Helping the Homeless and the Hungry. Responsibly.

Endorsed by Stellenbosch Muncipality

Coupons can be exchanged for either a blanket, meal or stay at the night shelter. Social workers meet with the needy and connect them with more network resources.

What We Offer

The Problem

Really helping a person living on the street can be difficult. Engagements with the urban poor are not easy.

Giving money (or even food!) can do more damage than good…

  • May encourage a victim mentality
  • Allows for irresponsible habits
  • Not holistic
  • Temporary solution
  • Drives street economy

The Benefits

Giving coupons have the following advantages:

  • Stops bad spending (i.e. alcohol or drugs)
  • Supports charities working with people in need
  • Encourages people to take responsibility
  • Directs people to places they can receive:
  • Holistic support
  • Sustainable support

The Solution

There is a way to really help… by giving a coupon!
Coupons can be exchanged for either a blanket, meal or stay at the night shelter. Social workers meet with the needy and connect them with more network resources.

  • Blankets are given under the discretion of Straatlig staff to prohibit the re-selling of blankets and allow for people to take responsibility.
  • Meals are free of charge on Sundays to Fridays and only require a coupon for Saturdays.
  • Staying at the night shelter is subject to whether the person has not been discharged within the last 3 months. And there is only space for 70 people.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

Coupons are bought at one of our partnering outlets. When someone comes to ask for money, food, shelter or warmth, you can then give them a coupon. This coupon is then exchanged for one of these services at our non-profit partners who will be able to connect the person in need with other services.

What if someone asks for food, but does not want a coupon?

Sometimes a person might not want a coupon. This often happens when they actually just want money and how they spend it may not always be in a responsible way. We really discourage people from giving money. If you want to provide more support or give money, reach out to us or work with existing non-profit organisations.

Where can we buy coupons?

We try to make coupons as accessible to you as possible. We thus have over 50 partnering outlets in the area of Stellenbosch

How much does it cost?

It costs only R10 per coupon. A coupon can be exchanged for any of the services on the coupon.

How do I give feedback?
What is your vision, mission and values?

Vision:
Our aim is to enable healthy interaction between the general public and people in need.

Mission:
Our vision is being realised through a coupon system. These coupons are purchased by members of the public given to a person in need. The beneficiary can then use the coupon for any of its services at the indicated partners. Through this, we hope to limit the street economy and direct people in need to organisations where they can receive the proper support.

Values:
We believe in the potential and value of all human beings.

Through providing support in co-operation with our partners, we strive to achieve the following:

  • Provide as holistic support possible
  • Discouraging victim and hero mentalities
  • Allowing for community interaction
  • Addressing symptoms and causes of issues
  • Supporting others in achieving their potential
  • Limiting destructive habits and behaviours

“We want to enable healthy interaction between the general public and people in need.”
